If I Decide To Sell My Trees, How Do I Find A Buyer?

What is the length of time for a Timber Sale Contract?
Normally a buyer is given a year to harvest the trees he has purchased.
If a contract is more restrictive the number of potential buyers will
be more limited resulting in lower bids for the timber.
How Am I Paid For My Trees?
Antietam Forestry Consultants will collect payments for your trees from
the buyer before they are cut and removed from your property. Buyer's
are also required to escrow funds to guarantee satisfactory contract performance.
Will The Environment Be Protected?
Timber harvesting plans address environmental concerns such as sedimentation
and erosion control, water quality and stream protection. The location
of roads and loading areas is determined to minimize disturbance to soils
and geographic features. Antietam Forestry Consultants inspects harvesting
operations to ensure compliance with the harvesting plan.
Do I Have To Be Concerned About Federal And State Regulations And Local
Ordinances?
No. Antietam Forestry Consultants will ensure that all activities pertaining
to growing and harvesting timber are in compliance with Federal, State,
and Local regulations.
Supervision of the Timber Sale
A project forester from Antietam Forestry Consultants periodically checks
timber sale progress to insure contract and environmental compliance.
If any infractions are discovered, the timber buyer must cease all activities
until actions are taken to correct deficiencies and bring the operation
back into compliance.
Timber Sale Payments
Payments are made according to contract terms, but generally an owner
can expect to receive payment for timber sold before any trees are cut
or logs removed form the property. Larger sales can be broken up into
parts so that the financial burden might not be so large and in this way
more buyers will be able to bid. Tracts are processed and payments made
before work begins on any given tract.
Taxes on Timber Sales
Normally Timber Sale revenues will be subject to capitol gains taxes.
Timber sale revenues are ordinary income only if the owner is in the timber
growing business. Consult your tax professional for the proper advice
in determining how your timber revenues should be treated.
